I don't know entirely how I feel about it, but then again, I've never experienced any of it first hand. Some of what I read about how rigid and structured it is rubs me the wrong way, but at the same time I can imagine the benefits of having a formalized teacher-student relationship. I just thought this was a wonderfully put together overview of the history of Zen. I can understand your reaction. On the one hand, it seems (from the outside) rife with ego games and subjugation that turns me off and makes me wonder why on earth I should want a meditation practice other than my solitary sitting. On the other hand, I find the teacher-student relationship in yoga to be one of the most important aspects of practice, enabling me to utilize my particular tendency toward bhakti as a way to deepen my focus and my effort.
