I can understand your reaction. I don't know entirely how I feel about it, but then again, I've never experienced any of it first hand. Some of what I read about how rigid and structured it is rubs me the wrong way, but at the same time I can imagine the benefits of having a formalized teacher-student relationship.

I just thought this was a wonderfully put together overview of the history of Zen.

I have a decidedly mixed reaction to the formalized teacher-student dominion structure of Zen practice.

On the one hand, it seems (from the outside) rife with ego games and subjugation that turns me off and makes me wonder why on earth I should want a meditation practice other than my solitary sitting.

On the other hand, I find the teacher-student relationship in yoga to be one of the most important aspects of practice, enabling me to utilize my particular tendency toward bhakti as a way to deepen my focus and my effort.

I know this is a really long read, but it was great info, so I thought I'd share it.

Maybe I will create a page, just for posting articles...I don't know.
